The Role

We are looking for a software developer, or engineer with a strong software background, to work in our Metocean team to assist with environmental data processing to support our operational systems. The team is concerned with the transmission, processing, quality assurance, monitoring and analysis of meteorological oceanographic (wave, tide, current and wind) data.

A typical dataflow begins with the raw real-time sensor outputs of various instruments in the field, processing can then occur onsite or on our cloud infrastructure where it is stored in databases, before being displayed on clients’ real-time decision-making systems. Processing is optimised for reliability and efficiency.

The software developer role would involve designing algorithms, testing and deploying them for operational use, and maintaining the code. We think about a range of things from wave statistics, current directions, concurrent threads, ACID transactions, SSL certificates, and how far above water to install instruments. Our software is written in Haskell and Python and Nix, then deployed with a declarative tool to remote physical machines, VMs, AWS EC2s, Docker containers and Raspberry Pis.

The Metocean team is multidisciplinary with backgrounds in coastal engineering, oceanography, IT, electrical engineering and instrumentation.

This position is a full-time position (flexible working arrangements available) with a 6-month probation period.

About You

Applicants must possess the following:

Strong mathematical background
Enjoyment of coding
Motivation to learn new processing techniques
Independent problem solving ability
Fluent spoken and written English
Strong written and verbal communication and presentation skills  
Friendly, motivated and professional approach to work
Bachelor’s degree in Software Development, Computer Science or Engineering
Minimum 2 years commercial software engineering experience
Experience with any functional programming language (Haskell would be highly regarded) in the context of signal processing and concurrent communication.
Sound knowledge of Linux, BSD or other Unix operating systems
Knowledge of modern software engineering practices and methodologies
Fluent spoken and written English
Strong written and verbal communication and presentation skills
A friendly, motivated and professional approach to work

The following is desirable and well regarded, but not essential:

Familiarity with Nix and NixOS would be highly regarded
Experience with python
Experience with SBC (e.g. Raspberry Pi) and IoT devices
Cloud platforms – specifically AWS

List of Duties

Design, code, and debug applications in various software languages
Write well-designed, testable, efficient code
Support, maintain, and document software functionality
Integrate software with existing systems
Develop software solutions by studying information needs; conferring with users; studying systems flow, data usage, and work processes
Investigate, identify and fix software problems
Ensure the security of software programs and development environments
Collaborate with other engineers and programmers to determine requirements and design components
Inspect program logic for errors in programming
Test and debug
Provide ongoing support to other engineers, programmers, quality assurance personnel or users

Applicants shortlisted will be required to sit an in-house exam which assesses their problem solving and software development skills with some basic mathematics.
